McGill's Schulich School of Music ranked top Canadian university by QS in the Performing Arts Category

On March 21st, 2016 the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2016 were announced and McGill's Schulich School of Music was named the top Canadian performing arts university in the country. QS rankings highlight the world’s top universities in 42 subjects, based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact.  The Schulich School of Music was ranked 26th overall.

SQRM applauds Schulich School of Music researchers

Marcelo Wanderley appointed an INRIA International Chair, 2016-20.

Professor Marcelo M. Wanderley has been awarded an Inria International Chair for 2016-2020. Prof. Wanderley is the first McGill researcher to be awarded this chair and is among the four awardees this year. Inria is the French National Institute for Computer Science and Applied Mathematics.

Anna Peletsis wins the McGill Concerto Competition, Piano Division.

Anna Peletsis, a doctoral piano student of Professor Marina Mdivani, has won the McGill Concerto Competition and will perform next season with the McGIll Symphony Orchestra.

Brent Proseus, trumpet, winner of the McGill Concerto Competiton.

Brent Proseus, a student of Professor Richard Stoelzel, Brass Area Chair, has been named winner of the 2016 Schulich School of Music Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion competition.  Brent’s first trumpet teacher was his father, Eric and he  continued his studies with Gregg Good.

An Interview with Wirth Vocal Prize winner Chelsea Rus

On Feb. 7, Chelsea Rus was named the winner of the inaugural Wirth Vocal Prize. According to the Schulich School of Music’s website, the $25,000 prize is given to “an exceptional voice student… in recognition of outstanding accomplishment as a singer and significant promise for an international career.” Pretty heady stuff for any young singer – but especially so for Rus, who had never even heard an opera until her first year of college in 2009 back home in Abbotsford, B.C.

Elinor Frey wins Opus Prize for the Berlin Sonatas

Cellist Elinor Frey, an alumni of the Schulich School of Music, has won the early-music recording of the year award for her disc Berlin Sonatas on the Passacaille label.   Fascinated with the cello’s origins and the creative process of new music, Elinor Frey plays both period and modern instruments.

John Grew to be invested into the Order of Canada on Friday, February 12

Professor Emeritus John Grew, former Dean of Music, will be invested into the Order of Canada on Friday, February 12th 2016 in a ceremony at Rideau Hall. The ceremony, which begins at 10:30am EST, will be webcast live from the Governor General of Canada's website. A webcast link will be available on their homepage before 10:30am on Friday.
